Telescope Peak in Mid April

Post by DVLion » Tue Feb 11, 2014 6:48 pm

How snowy is it up there around mid April normally? Can hikers get by without special gear? Will be hiking from Mahogany Flats or maybe Kilns. I'm not used to estimating based off current snowfall so I can't really tell by looking at current levels.

Also, any word on the road between Emigrant Pass camp ground and Thorndike? I was there in December and that road was closed temporarily due to washout.

Okay last year, a dry year, we were up at Mahogany Flats and met a couple guys coming back down from hiking up to Telescope Peak. This was the last week in March, 2013. There was no snow at the flats, some up on the peak. Others here will know more. Might just have to keep checking the morning report.

Here's a pic I took on 2014/Jan/28 (at Gower Gulch area). Good snow on Telescope Peak. And Gowergulch just said they got more.

Well, that's not good. We'd probably be there mid April. Is this a late snow or about normal?
