Park closure?

Post by MojaveGeek » Sun Jan 21, 2018 7:08 pm

An reports from the scene? I'm down at Joshua Tree and the park is wide open, no fees, no staff, no one supplying toilet paper at the campgrounds, lots of people Did see three law enforcement vehicles, including two responding to an accident this morning.

Seems like DV is in a similar state. "Some areas accessible, accessibility may change without notice." They're hardly battening down the hatches like in 2013. I guess there isn't money to do that even, or it was deemed "non-essential"

There were stories in the press about how the Zinke DOI Administration was "scrambling" to keep the big-name parks open during the fed shutdown, so as not to irk the park visitors towards being angry with the feds. How the DOI arranged for the individual parks not to put up the usual roadblock signs I don't know. I wonder about places like the Racetrack Playa or other exotic attractions being trashed by yahoos who might be emboldened by the perceived lack of enforcement.

It happened last time, sure to happen again. The rangers are still there, and must respond to law-enforcement problems. They're basically hanging out waiting for something to happen. Seen lots of social media action from furloughed Yosemite employees.
