Nov 14-17 trip. Artist Dr, Chloride City to Keane parking lot, Defense mine, and Golden canyon

Post by DavidW » Wed Nov 20, 2019 10:12 am

Started the first day driving into Death Valley, and stopping at the 2nd dip of Artist drive. Climbed up the first pink dry fall by the road and hiked back. A few more scrambles up a couple more dry falls and made my way back to the larger fall. Didn't try to climb it or find a way around since it was getting late. It was a nice little hike though.

The first full day I started at Chloride City, where l left my truck (my dad and his friend we're meeting me at the Keane Wonder Mine parking lot to give me a ride back up). Made my way down to Big Bell Mine where I hung out for about 15 mins. I had been there a few times before, so I've already explored the area pretty good. From there I followed the trail towards Keane Wonder Mine. There was a small section that the trail was really hard to see, but checking the GPS, I knew I was on the right path. Made it to Keane and ate lunch. Then made my way down to the parking lot. Was a nice day and the weather was great.

The next day we took the road to the base of Lookout mountain. From there I wanted to drive the road further up towards Defense mine, but the rest of the group preferred to hike from where we were. So it would be about 3 miles in, 3 miles out. I'm the youngest of who was there (44), and the oldest is over 80. So myself and another guy (54) made it to Defense Mine. My dad and the 2 others didn't go the whole way. The last part of the hike gets pretty steep, where the road forks to go up to the mine. The other fork heading to Lookout City. We finally made it to the mine and ate lunch, then proceeded to check out the mine area. Really cool mine, with a couple of rooms inside. The structures outside were in pretty good condition too. Definitely plan on going back there again.

The last day, before heading home, we did Golden Canyon. We parked 2 cars at the Golden Canyon parking lot, then drove 1 up to Zabriskie Point where we started the hike down. This was my first time hiking Golden Canyon. It was a nice hike, although it was a bit warm out for November.....about 85-90°. Next time I think I want to explore some of the side canyons, might be pretty cool. Can't wait for the next trip out!

The hike from Zabrieski back to the Golden Canyon parking lot is via Gower Gulch. It's worth a look to do the round trip.

We did Zabriskie point, through Badlands, passed by Manly Beacon, then came down through Golden Canyon to the parking lot. Next time we will do the parking lot, Gower Gulch, Badlands loop.

Cool to get to do the Chloride to Keene parking one way! I really liked that area and am very pleased it reopened.

I got to do the Chloride - Keane downhill once years ago when I got a lift up to Chloride (actually, a couple of good friends got married up there that day, but that's a different story). It's really an amazing walk down, views all the way all day. When I was halfway down the last stretch below the head end of the Keane tramway I thought I saw my friends coming in on the dirt road to Keane, and decided to run down so I could beat them and pretend I had been waiting for them (we were both late). My damn legs just wouldn't do it after all that downhill :) Had to walk to rest of the way. But it was a really awesome day!

If I tried to run downhill from that point, I probably would still be rolling down the side of the hill haha. My legs were jello!

Hey MG, can you pull a Paul Harvey and tell us the rest of that married at Chloride City story? Sound like a fun one!

Sure :)

I was coming coming out every January with my young daughter, and there was a group of photographers from San Diego who were on a similar schedule, so we would hang out in the evenings at SPW and do some hiking with the more active members of their crew some days. The organizer and his partner announced early one week that they were going to get married up at Chloride if they could find a Nevada justice of the peace with 4WD. They did, and so we all went up there, a rather ragtag bunch for an informal ceremony. My daughter was "flower girl" with a sprig of creosote bush, and we all had some Nilla Wafers and wine for a snack with a view afterwards.

That evening we were to gather at the old sand dune picnic area for a celebratory dinner and campfire (they used to make fire in an old washing machine tub, very good ventilation and leave no trace). My daughter went off with the bride and groom to Beatty to try to find something to use as a wedding cake - she still remembers the donut she got in town. And I headed down to Keane for an evening pick up.

The dinner at dusk was great fun and we saw lots of kangaroo rats hopping about. A really great day. And what a perfect spot for a wedding!!

What a tasty tale of Death Valley lore. I love it and thanks for posting it. Any photos of the event to add even more savor to the flavor? Any word on how the couple is doing currently? Hopefully not, but just in case they want to terminate their marriage, they could reverse the ceremony at Chloride and call it Divorce Valley. :)

I'll have to look in my old scanned images to see if I have a pic; probably do. As for the couple... Well they did get divorced some years later, and she died about 5 years ago. She (Twylla) helped me print some of my panos on a roll paper printer she had when I visited San Diego at some point and I have three of them, framed, on my dining room wall. She also willed me some nice Native American baskets, of which she was an avid collector, so I have her memory with me often.
