While hiking out to the Panamint Dunes in Dec. 2007, I came across this item wedged under a bush. I really have no idea what it is. The primary material is canvas, and it looked like it hadn't been out there very long. I took my pics and wedged it back in the bush so someone else may "discover" it someday. Cool

The part number is interesting, but researching it in the "Fed Log" (military parts information) system didn't come up with anything.

Any ideas?

Based on the construction, I would guess it is part of some type military parachute. Whether for cargo or personnel, I don't know.

It's likely British, whether army or air force; they use Lake Hill as a practice drop site. If you look around near the road out there, you'll find sand bags used as dummy loads for parachutes drops.

I share hangar space with the Brits when they're out here and recently they've been using water cans for load weight instead of sand. Less intrusive and easier to fill.

Interesting... I took this pic the day I hiked up Dolomite Canyon (Dec. 6, 2007) It shows a Herky flying over the dry lakebed in the Panamint Valley, north of the highway. After I took the pic, someone jumped and chuted down, but I couldn't see where they landed because Lake Hill got in the way. Was that the Brits? I'm curious what they're doing around there?

...the closest we Brits have to a desert is a nice sandy beach. I suspect that training here for our joint operations is far more constructive here that by the seaside! Hopefully the locals here are slightly friendlier also than where they are likely to deploy to. Laughing

Joint operations/training take place at may US installations.Brits,Canucks and most NATO COUNTRIES and South American air forces operate Hurks.

If you look close you can find empty French Army wine cans at 29 Palms.

Just not the US Navy hide out in China Lake.

Just so happens that I skydive a couple of weekends out of the month. I know a lot of parachute riggers both military and civilian so I will show them this photo and maybe come up with an answer.

Stand by.

This from a parachute rigger.

"Looks like a fabric kicker plate for a spring loaded pilot chute, -----or----- evidence of alien spacraft landing in the desert"

Basically a disposable launching pad for a spring loaded little parachute that when deployed pulls out the big main parachute.

Laughing I'm surprised it took so long for someone to bring up aliens!

OK, so the "drogue" chute part of a LAPES-type set up?

Well not so much a drogue chute but a normal cargo parachute. The spring loaded pilot chute needs something to be compressed upon besides the parachute itself.. This fabric type kicker plate is it. The launching pad for the pilot chute. I have more and will post in a while...
