Ghost Town for sale

Post by bluegreen kayak » Mon Jun 18, 2018 2:45 pm

My husband, knowing my fondness for the Death Valley area, brought my attention to this site offering Cerro Gordo for sale: cerrogordomines.com

I'm thinking I should buy a lottery ticket tomorrow; that would be my only chance.

While we were looking on Google Earth at the nearest town, Keeler, we saw a strange arrangement of lines on the south end of town, with trucks and heavy equipment. We could not figure out what was going on. Anyone know?

Cerro Gordo now in escrow. Keeler lines are mineral mining on the dry lake surface, which has been going on since the late 1800s.

Well that didn’t take long to sell. Wondering what the future of Cerro Gordo may be.

Perhaps you were looking at the dust mitigation work they are doing on Owens Lake bed?

A close look at the bios of each individual of the group of buyers, I am skeptical of the future of Cerro Gordo.

I haven't been up there for 2-3 years. Was the place being restored, or even properly maintained? Simply maintaining it as it was would take effort and money. The fact they put it up for sale tells me the family found it a burden and probably a money pit.

The photos in the articles show the overall condition of the town as it is now.

I’ve made many visits to CG between 1974-2008, knew Mike and Jody, and can tell you that the results of their efforts advanced at glacial speeds. Isolation, costs, the need for employment out of the area, the maintenance/repair/deterioration ratio, climate and other factors basically made their work on CG sporadic and long term.

There was a lot of results, though. The Hotel was remodeled extensively, as well as the Gordon residence, other buildings were rehabilitated back to livability or usefulness. A water pumping, storage and distribution system utilizing water deep in the flooded CG mine created. And other changes.

With the sale, there will be more money to throw at CG, but the logistics will be the same. And how long the buyers will be interested in CG and support it before the next big thing remains to be seen.
