August 17-24: White-Whitney-10460

Post by wbdeford » Thu Aug 15, 2019 1:45 pm

About to make my first August DVNP trip! Flying into LV on Saturday....No backpacking this time--nothing but day hikes

Get supplies from Pahrump Saturday evening
Camp along Harry Wade somewhere
Badwater the morning of the 18th....gotta start at the bottom
Bristlecone pines the afternoon of the 18th, camping at the gate to White Mountain
White Mountain Peak on the 19th
Down to Lone Pine the morning of the 20th to get my permit and up to Whitney Portal
Whitney day hike on the 21st
Over to Mahogany Flat on the 22nd--might stop and cross country hike to Bald peak if time and energy allow
Telescope trail and beyond to 10460 on the 23rd
Down to Yuma for a whirlwind visit with my daughter on the 24th, and back to LV for a red-eye home.

If anyone wants to join me for White Mountain or 10460, let me know. Starting early for both (headlamp before dawn).

This sounds great. Badwater in August is doable EARLY in the morning (I did it last September at 4:30AM).

I'm really nerding out on this.....not satisfied with only going as low as the Badwater parking lot before attempting Whitney...fortunately, past experience has told me if I go about a mile out on the salt flats, I can say I've been to the bottom. IOW, I don't have to go 3.4 miles out to the central point.

Lots of Marmots at gate to WMP. Just make sure to check coolant level and hoses before leaving. Marmots have a history of gnawing on hoses to get to that sweet but deadly concoction.

In Yuma visiting my daughter and will write a trip report in the next few days. No vehicle damage from marmots, though I saw quite a few of them :)

I saw a load of marmots in Colorado, where I was for the last two weeks :)

Did you summit Whitney? Probably. Lucky you! Looking forward to a TR. I got to the Colorado high point, Mt. Elbert at 14.4K.
