M6.5 Earthquake outside Tonopah

Post by Gowergulch42 » Fri May 15, 2020 7:58 am

Early this morning a 6.5 Earthquake struck the empty desert west of Tonopah, in the Monte Cristo Mountains. The fault appears to be unmapped, though some aftershocks are occurring on the mapped E-W aligned fault zone that runs through Candelaria ghost town.

This is normal earthquake activity, even though it's uncommon, and is part of the broader forces creating the valleys and mountains of Nevada. Earthquakes of this size seem to happen every few decades, though this is the biggest in central Nevada since 2000. A few dozen others of this size have occurred since 1950, including the M7.3 Dixie Valley Quake, which was 6.3 times bigger.

This has no relation to the quakes in Idaho, Mammoth, Bodie, Utah, or anywhere else.

When that occurred, I was camping just off Highway 264 at the South End Of The Fish Lake Valley. Sleeping in the back of my SUV, on my way back to Las Vegas from a week-long hiking and camping trip..

According to Google Maps, I was about 60 miles south of the epicenter. So as you can imagine I did indeed feel it distinctly! I woke up and the vehicle was shaking quite noticeably.

Indeed! There were at least three aftershocks I felt, before I could get back to sleep.
